門脇俊一 SHUNICHI KADOWAKI (1913-2006)

Shunichi Kadowaki, born in Kanonji City, Kagawa Prefecture, is celebrated for his diverse works spanning watercolour, oils, woodblock prints, sumi-e,  and 屏風 byōbu (folding screens). Reflecting a vibrant depiction and spirit of everyday life reminiscent of ukiyo-e’s portrayal of Edo culture; Kadowaki’s admiration for ukiyo-e, use of delicate brushstrokes, warm colours, and depictions of seasonal landscapes, botanical, & cultural scenes have garnered him acclaim as a "modern ukiyo-e artist."

Creating celebrated works such as “Eighty-Eight Sacred Places in Shikoku” and famed byōbu screens such as "The Four Seasons of the Imperial Palace'' and “Records of Kūkai’s Actions”, Kadowaki has received accolades both domestically in Japan and internationally - exhibiting at the Lourdes International Biennale and the École des Beaux-Arts, France. Achieving notable recognition later in life, Kadowaki’s works have faded from prominence since his passing, but are now resurging in significant acclaim due to the heartfelt charm and joy embodied in his scenes of Japan - the Shunichi Kadowaki Museum in Kanonji City continuing to share his legacy with the world.
