Notes: #53 (Enmyō-ji (円明寺)): No. 53 on the Shikoku pilgrimage. Enmyō-ji is located near Matsuyama, Ehime prefecture. Famous not only for its beautifully elaborate roofing, the temple is well regarded for its iconic “Maria Kannon” statue - a surviving reference back to the Tokugawa Era and the 17th-19th Century. Christianity was suppressed - leading Christians to create idols to their Virgin Mary in the form of disguised, often cross bearing Kannon’s (the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy), or stonework.
Eighty-Eight Sacred Places in Shikoku: Shunichi Kadowaki’s series maps each of the Eighty-Eight Temples around Shikoku’s historic 1,385km pilgrim route. A tradition central to Japanese Shingon Buddhism and its founder Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi), this enriching trail continues to be a sought pilgrimage today - either by those in search of quiet reflection, spiritual enlightenment, or simply, a culturally rich experience.
