An isolated yet important milestone on the pilgrimage, with over a days walk in either direction to the next stop, Kongofuki-ji was founded in 822 by Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi) himself. Numerous Buddha stone carvings reside alongside Senju Kannon Bosatsu - the temples primary deity - and views atop lead out into the wide Pacific Ocean.
Eighty-Eight Sacred Places in Shikoku: Shunichi Kadowaki’s series maps each of the Eighty-Eight Temples around Shikoku’s historic 1,385km pilgrim route. A tradition central to Japanese Shingon Buddhism and its founder Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi), this enriching trail continues to be a sought pilgrimage today - either by those in search of quiet reflection, spiritual enlightenment, or simply, a culturally rich experience.
