Go (Tsuyoshi) Yayanagi - 愛の動物誌[E] (Fauna of Love: E)
Title: 愛の動物誌[E] (Journal d’animaux aimes (E)/Fauna of Love: E). Ed. 25/50.
Series: 愛の動物誌 (Fauna of Love).
Fauna of Love (愛の動物誌): an alphabetical picture-poem collection (edition of 50) published in two parts between 1971 & 1974 (‘71/’72(A-K), ‘73(L-U), & ‘74(BAO)). A comical expression & exploration of the universal commonalities to life & existential love shared between man and nature through playful animal imagery, black & white collage, & juxtaposing modern motifs from 1960’s/70’s society. Yayanagi’s earliest significant collection of work following his return to Japan in the late 1960’s & shift to silkscreen Pop-Uki style. A predecessor to future iconic collections such as Tale of Genji 源氏物語, The Kojiki 古事記, and further picture poem series’: The Earth...and Now 地球…そして今は, Men & Women 男と女, & The Flying Pencils 飛んだえんぴつ .
Artist: 矢柳剛 Go (Tsuyoshi) Yayanagi (1933-Present).
Signed & Dated: Signed and dated in pencil, 1972.
Medium: Silkscreen.
Paper Size: Approx H: 79.50cm x W: 55.00cm.
Condition: Near mint. A wonderful original piece. Intensity of colour remains, no foxing, marks, or deterioration to paper. Well stored over the years. Please refer to photos / Contact for any further questions & condition report.
Notes: One of my personal favourites to Yayanagi’s 愛の動物誌 Fauna of Love series due to the intensity & vibrancy of contrasting tropical colour and the sense of fluidity/dynamism/movement created through shape and abstract form.
What do you see? Given Yayanagi’s juxtaposition of man & nature: A pregnant woman - the turtle breaking to the surface, breaking through membranes & heading to the exit/unknown? Maybe, just maybe…, given Yayanagi’s humour? A further metaphor toward the circle of life and ultimate commonality between all living beings.
