A comical expression & exploration of the universal commonalities to life & existential love shared between man and nature through playful animal imagery, black & white collage, & juxtaposing modern motifs from 1960’s/70’s society. Yayanagi’s earliest significant collection of work following his return to Japan in the late 1960’s & shift to silkscreen Pop-Uki style. A predecessor to future iconic collections such as Tale of Genji 源氏物語, The Kojiki 古事記, and further picture poem series’: The Earth...and Now 地球…そして今は, Men & Women 男と女, & The Flying Pencils 飛んだえんぴつ .
Artist: 矢柳剛 Go (Tsuyoshi) Yayanagi (1933-Present).
Signed & Dated: Signed and dated in pencil, 1972.
Medium: Silkscreen.
Paper Size: Approx H: 79.5cm x W: 55.00cm.
Condition: Good. A wonderful original piece. Intensity of colour remains, no foxing. Small indentation within central segment of globe. Well stored over the years. Please refer to photos / Contact for any further questions & condition report.
Notes: A fun, lovely image, with a primarily amphibian theme? However, whilst perhaps lighthearted in illustration - are the fun smiling faces, wide eyes, & eye forms really Yayanagi’s hidden expression of their true witness to the damage/pollution of our oceans, rivers, waterways? Or perhaps an expression of a loving happiness & acceptance of their place within the natural order of the world? A lovely example of Yayanagi’s black & white zebra pattern and further sensual/erotic human forms.
