Notes: Hasedera Temple (長谷寺) is nestled in the mountains east of central Sakurai city (桜井市), Nara prefecture. Established in 686, it is the main temple of the Buzan sect of Shingon Buddhism. Housing the Eleven Faced Kannon “Juichimen Kannon” (十一面観音); the temple’s Main Hall, a National Treasure, is reached by climbing the temple’s “Noboriro” (昇り廊) - a roofed stone staircase consisting of 399 steps (an Important Cultural Property itself). Also attracting visitors given its beautiful bloom of flowers all year-round - peonies, rhododendrons, hydrangea, cherry-blossom - Hasedera is also known as the "flower temple".
