Notes: A truly spectacular piece by Fumio Kitaoka depicting the Naruto Whirlpools (鳴門の渦潮) - one of Japan’s natural wonders found in the tidal waters of the Naruto Strait 鳴門海峡 between the mainland of Shikoku’s Naruto City, Tokushima Prefecture, and Awaji Island 淡路島, Honshu. Tides between the Seto Inland Sea (瀬戸内海) and the Kii Channel (紀伊水道), which leads out toward the Pacific Ocean, meet, forming fast flowing waters & whirlpools of upto 20m in diameter. Kitaoka’s print captures a perspective drawn from Awaji Island - depicting what appears to be the Magosaki Lighthouse 孫崎灯台 on the opposing bank and the shadow of the iconic Onaruto Bridge 大鳴門橋, which spans the Naruto Strait, cast across the waters below. A ship crosses the seas - perhaps one of the regular tourist viewing trips!?
