Notes: Nishio, Aichi Prefecture, is renowned as the primary producer of 碾茶 tencha leaves, the essential whole leaf ingredient for matcha green tea. Its tea heritage dates back to 1271 when Shoichi Kokushi founded Jissoji Temple and initiated tea cultivation. Flourishing further through the 19th and 20th centuries, Nishio's tea plantations benefit from the ample water of the Yahagigawa river, its nutrient-rich soil, and temperate climate. A month prior to harvest, special nets/covers (seen in Kitaoka’s print) shade against sunlight exposure as means to carefully cultivate their final vibrant colour, elegant aroma, & rich flavours before harvest. Nishio stands alongside Uji and Shizuoka plantations as other famed locales for their green tea in Japan. A Koinobori (鯉のぼり), 'carp streamer', adds a little fun & festivity to Kitaoka’s composition.
