Signed & Dated: Circa 1985. Seals/chops to left margin: (Published by Kyoto Hanga-In (京都版画院版). Engraved/carved by (彫): Kishima Shigeo (木島重男). Printed by (摺): Tochigi Yoshiro (栃木義郎). “Daimon” & edition seal beneath. The Japan Sumo Association revived the traditional Sumo nishiki-e art in 1985 by commissioning Daimon Kinoshita to create a series of ukiyo-e prints - harnessing the traditional methods & expertise of the artist, skilled carvers, and printers - to depict sumo wrestlers for the opening of the National Sports Arena in Ryogoku. “不許按製” (Rights), “財団法人 日本相撲協会” (The Japan Sumo Association), alongside copyright seal along lower margin.

Notes: A tremendous image capturing the essence of Yokozuna Hokutoumi Nobuyoshi 北勝海信芳 (1963-) performing his “shiomaki” (塩まき) (“salt throwing”) ceremony before his bout. An oshi-sumo specialist with a powerful tachi-ai charge and thrusting technique; Hokutoumi Nobuyoshi was promoted in 1987 to become the 61st Yokozuna (横綱)! Hokutoumi retired in 1992 before opening his own Hakkaku stable & taking active roles as commentator & analyst, and chairman to the Japan Sumo Association. Daimon Kinoshita notes on his website:
