Notes: A really fun piece steeped in history. Ay-O draws inspiration from the famed French post-impressionist naive painter Henri Rousseau (1844-1910). Rousseau’s c.1891 “Portrait of of Mr. X (Pierre Loti)” presents the french naval officer, (born Julien Viaud, & known for his love of cats, poetry & travel writing) in a striking red hat, cigarette in hand, and peculiar striped cat by his side! For this wonderful print, Ay-O has transformed this strange striped tabby cat in rainbow colours! The “Portrait of of Mr. X (Pierre Loti)” which Ay-O references is held by the Kunsthaus in Zurich, Switzerland. Ay-O published two versions of this print - here with a mustard yellow/golden background ((MIXバック)), & also in a navy blue (#888).
