Notes: This remarkable piece draws inspiration from “A Cat and Butterflies” (猫に蝶) (c. 1765-1770), a woodblock print by the celebrated Edo-period artist 鈴木春信 Suzuki Harunobu (1725–1770). Ay-O created a companion/alternative print in differing colours alongside this piece, which he respectively titled “春信 vs. 北斎” (Harunobu vs Hokusai)(#910), referencing both Harunobu and the renowned ukiyo-e master 葛飾北斎 Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849). Hokusai did depict images of butterflies & moths in some series of works but I’ve yet to find a specific source Ay-O draws from. (Perhaps I’m looking in the wrong direction here…). A striking piece & published in smaller edition run.
