Notes: "Grapes of Canaan" by Sadao Watanabe is inspired by the biblical account in the Old Testament, The Book of Numbers 13:23. In this story, Moses sends twelve spies to survey the land of Canaan. When the spies return, two of them carry a large cluster of grapes on a pole, along with pomegranates and figs, showcasing the land's fertility. This imagery highlights the promise and abundance of Canaan, the land God vowed to give the Israelites. Watanabe captures a scene of the two spies - traditionally identified as Joshua and Caleb - bearing grapes, underscoring the positive report of the land's richness, affirming its description as a place "flowing with milk and honey."
