Notes: A fabulous print by Masao Ido, titled 高瀬川 (Takase River), capturing a tranquil moment along the historic canal in Kyoto. Built in 1611 by Suminokura Ryoi, the 高瀬川 Takasegawa was a vital waterway during the Edo period, facilitating the transport of goods such as rice, sake, and firewood between Kyoto and Osaka via flat-bottomed boats, such as the one depicted here laden with cargo. The scene is framed by traditional wooden townhouses (町家, machiya), a hallmark of Kyoto’s urban landscape, and weeping willows, which have long symbolized the fleeting beauty of nature in Japanese culture. The carefully rendered stone embankments and arched bridge emphasize the canal’s dual role as both a functional trade route and an enduring element of Kyoto’s picturesque cityscape.
