Maki’s “Mini Zodiac” as Daniel Tretiak notes. A really beautiful print that echoes Maki’s Animal Song/Zodiac series of 1968. The image depicts kanji for four years of the Zodiac calender - Ram, Horse, Bird, & Pig. The bigger sibling to San Mon Ban 41.
Part of a small series of prints where Maki elaborated upon fond designs from his San Mon Ban 2”x"2” works. Producing slightly larger prints, Daniel Tretiak details in his book - “The Life and Works of Haku” - that among others, other examples may include 75-55(Grapes) & 75-61 (Tree) for example - to encompass a “Mid-Summer” series.
