Notes: 天香久山 Mt. Amanokagu lies in Kashihara, Nara prefecture, and alongside 畝傍山 Mt. Unebi & 耳成山  Mt Miminashi, are collectively referred to as the 大和三山 “Yamato Sanzan”. Sacred mountains & a designated 名勝 Place of Scenic Beauty, the Yamato Sanzan have been celebrated in Japanese poetry through the centuries - most notably in Japan’s oldest existing poetry anthology - the 万葉集 Man’yoshu. According to myth, Mt. Amanokagu/“Kaguyama” is considered the most sacred mountain - falling straight from the sky - acquiring its commonly attributed “Amano” prefix, meaning: “of the heavens”. A fabulous print by Kitaoka capturing a distant view of Mt.Amanokagu through the rice fields, the evening sky peppered with insects.
